Unless the lick is …
Unless the lick is using open strings or something you can pretty much do it anywhere on the neck, just be aware that the B&G strings don’t have the same relationship as the others. (hope that makes sense) You are correct on the second part - the background music (it’s chords), will determine where the licks will sound best.
