Frank and Andreas break down the trading fours section of their improvisation. They stress the importance of making sure the melody outlines the changes and offer up a brilliant example of playing over the chords in a way that allows the listener to know exactly where the progression is even without accompaniment. This is followed by a brief description on the intricate interplay from their earlier improvisation.

Here we see Frank and Andreas jam Minor Swing in the key of A minor. Both Frank and Andreas approaches to harmony and rhythm at the start of this tune typify the Gypsy jazz style plenty of diminished and chromatic phrases bolstered by tight, driving rhythms comprised of sparse yet complex chord voicings.
Later in the performance, we hear Andreas introduce more blues-based note choices with Frank following suit with his chord voicings and rhythms. Frank then explores a few blues phrases before the boys break into a classically-themed section, illustrating just how far the Gypsy jazz style can be taken. The piece wraps things up while exploring a more traditional approach.

We are offered Frank and Andreas take on this traditional tune. The slower tempo gives them a chance to leave plenty of space when desired, or unleash a barrage of well-placed notes. Andreas also gives us a few bends to check out. Watch how Frank outlines the tune during his first pass this is a traditional approach to tunes like this, and Frank is a master at playing the tune straight, but musically.
Andreas second pass explores a jazzier side as he pulls idea after idea from his bottomless well. Watch as he rocks between slower soulful phrases and impeccable fast passages. Frank then makes sure he makes full use of the fingerboard before finishing up the tune with some fun interplay and a nice quote from Andreas.

Jazz Guitar Picking technique

Saturday, June 6th, 2009

Link to my Jazz lesson site:
http://www.thejazzchameleon.com

This is a right hand picking technique I use which I personally find to be very efficient, especially for playing Jazz guitar. I did not invent this technique but rather I was inspired by many different players and picked up different aspects of it from them. If I’m not mistaken, people like Jimmy Bruno and Birelli Lagrene also pick using a similar style.

Free guitar lesson - Jazz III guitar picks

Saturday, May 9th, 2009

Please sign up on GuitarGnosis for the (free) separate pdf guide which has high res pictures and a detailed breakdown of guitar picks.

Have you always been on the search for finding a proper guitar pick that gives you the right amount of tension, the perfect tone, and the perfect grip? Then check out the video review of Jazz III guitar picks

Jim Dunlop Jazz III XL series electric guitar picks are a slightly bigger size than the original JazzIII picks which provides more room for thumb grip and gives you the precise amount of attack that you need for playing riffs, rhythm, solos, and leads.

These are my absolute favorite guitar picks that have ever been manufactured, simply because the gauge is just right (1.38) and the pointy tip allows you to move much less (which is the best thing a lead guitarist can come by). Jazz III and Jazz III XL series come in two different materials of your choice: Red Nylon and Black Stiffo Nylon.

What is the difference between the two? The Jazz III picks come in the Red Nylon and Black Stiffo Nylon materials, as well as the more recent Ultex Jazz 3 material. Jazz III XL is made in both the Red Nylon and Black Stiffo Nylon materials; however, I do not believe Dunlop has released an XL version of the Ultex pick as of yet since it is a newer model.

Which of these would suit you best?

It’s very simple: player preference. The Jazz III picks are smaller, a bit harder to hold on to but have more of a maneuvering capability while the Jazz III XL picks are larger, easier to grip but gives you a little less room for your hand to move. The difference in the material as far as playing is that the Black Stiffo Nylon material is just a tad easier to grip, but the Red Nylon material gives you a bit of a brighter tone. I would use the black variations for rhythm and the red variations for leads.
